Marin Coastal Hot Springs This Weekend!

This weekend is one of the last Coastal Hot Springs events for the springs in West Marin. After this weekend there will be far fewer opportunities to soak in this magnificent springs until the Winter (and then the storms make things more problematic).

Background: There is a hot springs on the West Marin coast that is almost always underwater, and only emerges from the ocean when the tides are extremely low. During extreme low tides it is one of the most beautiful springs in the hemisphere. There is a small community of folks who meet at these springs, which are located near Steep Ravine Environmental campground, about 1/4 mi. south of Red Rock Beach, which is a couple of miles south of Stinson Beach.

This happens to be one of the times when it will appear for a few hours on Fri., Sat., and Sunday. It will also occur a few more times this summer, though it will mostly 'go away' soon, and then there will be more opportunities (weather permitting) in the Winter.

We are planning on going to the three hot spring sessions this weekend. The next one starts at around 4:00 AM and will end around 8:30 AM on Friday, August 1. There will be two more similar sessions on Sat. & Sun. mornings, and then there will be no springs for weeks (and then only very short periods in the middle of the night), and very few 'deep' low tides (and corresponding long hot springs) until October.

Lumber anyone?

So I have a 4-foot-tall bookshelf worth of 3/4" plywood available to anyone who wants it.

Also available are 4 5" pieces of redwood 4x4, and some assorted pine boards.

I need to face the fact that, no, I'm really not going to be building anything with it anytime soon, so please, please I encourage anyone who has wood-work projects or knows someone who does to take it off my hands.

It is now taking up space in our storage closet on the patio.

Hey guys,

I am currently searching for people to host a new science show called
"Prototype This" for the Discovery Channel. The show will bring
together a team of young scientists and builders who will combine
their skills and ideas to dream up, design and manufacture
technological inventions which meet some kind of everyday need or
want. The inventions could be in any field - home, work, leisure,
sport etc. The only limit is our imagination, skill set and
enthusiasm.

I'm emailing you because you have idealab/Burning Man/ILM/freaky
science/effects/weird artist/genius/T.E.D./Siggraph/Vulcan
connections. I'm also contacting universities, museums, and
organizations that combine science and art.

We're looking for at least 2 people; ideally:

1. An electronics wizard, hopefully with some building skills. Women
very welcome.
2. A crack builder. Again, women very welcome.

Or some combo thereof.

As a group, our hosts will have a wide and deep range of skills and
smarts, from robotics through mechanical engineering to electronics.
Some may have recently completed PhDs or Masters; others may have
never been near college but are brilliant and creative model makers or
builders. All candidates need to know their way around a workshop and
be able to bring more than just blue-sky thinking to the table. We
want tinkerers - people who love to build crazy stuff for the hell of
it.

The show will be very "hands on" - the entertainment will be in
watching our team battle with the problems inherent in fast-track
prototyping and overcome them to at least achieve a proof of concept
by the end of the episode. And seeing if the thing actually works.

If you think you might fit the bill or know anyone who does, please
contact me. We're looking at doing a casting session on September 25,
so time is short. Any and all ideas welcome!

well there may actually be two last ever cractory parties, but this is the one i'm really promoting, and i want to see as many of you as possible!

Reeling from civil war, mounting deaths, famine and a (lack of) Crack epidemic, Crackistan has finally collapsed into (even more) anarchy. Yes, the apocalypse has come, the four horsemen are getting high, the end-times are nigh, and the Cracktory is at ground zero!

Those of you who have not yet obtained rapture are welcome to come join us in our miserable attempt to eek out a post-civilization living on Saturday, September 16th for the semi-last Cracktory party ever. We’ll be suffering all night long, but the bunker doors won’t open until 10pm.

Why semi-final you ask? Well, because.. umm.. there may be one more Cracktory party “beyond the ACrackalypse” (on September 22nd?) However, in typical Cracktory fashion, and due to the fall of civilization as we know it, we don’t even know this for sure. Take a risk by waiting until the 22nd, or hedge your bets and come help us end the world on the 16th..

Loot the Cracktory! Take our stuff! Yes, anything in marked areas not nailed down or otherwise attached can be scavenged or stolen!

Pillage and destroy! We will have useless piles of equipment for you to bash with clubs like the filthy wretches your are!

Interesting attire is requested, but not required. However, we reserve the right to machine gun anyone who comes in pre-apocalypse clothing.

We will also be celebrating Tracey’s Birthday (again), and maybe Alison’s as well, even if she is leaving town mere hours before we get started.

this saturday at haven. I am not sure exactly what is happening yet. But we need to celebrate and lavish the hans viking on his entry into the 33rd year of his life (he is turning 32 ~ you do the math).

Most likely we want really good food as Hans is a bit of a connoisseur of fine foods and beverages.

Chupacabra's Evil Twin Found Dead In Maine

Residents are wondering if an animal found dead over the weekend may be the mysterious creature that has mauled dogs, frightened residents and been the subject of local legend for half a generation.

The animal was found near power lines along Route 4 on Saturday, apparently struck by a car while chasing a cat. The carcass was photographed and inspected by several people who live in the area, but nobody is sure exactly what it is.

Michelle O'Donnell of Turner spotted the animal near her yard about a week before it was killed. She called it a "hybrid mutant of something."

"It was evil, evil looking. And it had a horrible stench I will never forget," she told the Sun Journal of Lewiston. "We locked eyes for a few seconds and then it took off. I've lived in Maine my whole life and I've never seen anything like it."

For the past 15 years, residents across Androscoggin County have reported seeing and hearing a mysterious animal with chilling monstrous cries and eyes that glow in the night. The animal has been blamed for attacking and killing a Doberman pinscher and a Rottweiler the past couple of years.

People from Litchfield, Sabattus, Greene, Turner, Lewiston and Auburn have come forward to speak of a mystery monster that roams the woods. Nobody knows for sure what it is, and theories have ranged from a hyena or dingo to a fisher or coydog, an offspring of a coyote and a wild dog.

Now, people are asking if the mystery beast and the animal killed over the weekend are one and the same.

Wildlife officials and animal control officers declined to go to Turner to examine the remains. By Tuesday, the carcass had been picked clean by vultures and there was not much left of the dead animal.

Loren Coleman, a Portland author and cryptozoologist, said it's unlikely that the animal was anybody's pet.

After reviewing photos of the carcass, Coleman said he was bothered by the animal's ears and snout. It reminded him of a case years ago in northern Maine in which an animal shot by a hunter could not be identified. In the end, wildlife officials got a DNA analysis that showed the animal was a rare wolf-dog hybrid, he said.

Mike O'Donnell, who is married to Michelle O'Donnell, said the animal looked "half-rodent, half-dog" to him.

It was charcoal gray, weighed between 40 and 50 pounds and had a bushy tail, a short snout, short ears and curled fangs hanging over its lips, he said. It looked like "something out of a Stephen King story."

"This is something I've never seen before. It's an evil-looking thing," he said.

3rd Annual Haven Work Weekend & BBQ (6/24-25)

Hey All...

Spring has sprung and the brush has grown up around Haven with a vengence! I'm going to work on cutting it down with the new alligator lopper powertool I just ordered. (http://www.blackanddecker.com/ProductGuide/Product-Details.aspx?ProductID=9867) But... there's a LOT of brush to cut and plenty of other stuff to fix.

So, if anyone wants to come out and enjoy the sun, help would be greatly appreciated!! I'll reward you with some great BBQ and good company. We'll start Friday evening and work through Sunday afternoon. BBQs will be Saturday and Sunday evenings. Come pitch in for an hour or two or the whole weekend.

Also, if someone has a truck, I'd love to make some dump runs. Hans is hoping to have his truck fixed by then but no guarantees.

Now it is time to get your creative juices flowing. I am looking for
volunteers for my décor team for the Flambé Lounge Precompression. I am
looking for about 10 people for set up of décor. This will need to
happen Saturday between the hours of noon and 8pm right before the
party. I am also looking for about 10 people for take down which will
start that morning after the party closes around 5am to about 7am. If
you can’t make it for the early shift for take down we are also doing
take down Sunday the 4th from 3-6pm. The location of the Flambe is 100
Cargo Street, off 3rd Street near Evans. It's fairly close to the
Burning Man office and I can give you directions when you contact me.

Feel free to bring your creative ideas, your cool lights and decor if

tribe censorship is kinda weird...

So December, when I was considering Holiday cards (that never happened), SheBatt & I batted around the concept of doing a Girls of Haven calendar as a holiday card. Unfortunately, we determined that mid-December was far to late to start such an endeavor.

I really like the idea and I'd like to do it for 2006. I think this is a good time to get it going considering it means scheduling at least 12 photo shoots, plus design time and printing.

So, that means that I need 12 girls that are regulars at Haven. Surprisingly, I'm currently the only female resident. If you're interested and you're a common fixture around here, please apply within!

Getting this Calendar Printed -INPUT PLEASE!

OK, so here's the dirt. Traditional printing for this calendar is WAY too expensive. The best quote I got was $1500 for 250 calendars. Ugh. Someone offered a possible 50% off that and it was still preventative.

I wanted to print 50-100 calendars and give them away. I still haven't given up on that and I *may* have an ace or two up my sleave on that --but chances are slim.

We've shot a lot of pictures and they're better than most girly calendars could ever hope to be. This thing MUST go to press. (Previews: http://www.catoquery.org/havengirls)

Here are options. I'd like your feedback.

* Pre-sell. Shatter suggested I pre-sell 100 calendars at $15 a peice. Then go to press. My concern is that I don't have 100 ppl who will want them. Give 100 away.

* Investors. After seeing previews on Icka's site, Shatter (who worked on the DeathGuild Calendar & is a long-time BAGG DJ/fetish-scene name) said they'd sell *anywhere*. Get 15 people to drop $100, go to press. Then sell 150 at DeathGuild. Give 100 away.

* Drop Ship. I found a printer that works on self-published books etc. You upload the files and people just order it from their site. Calendars would cost about $12. No minimum or upfront costs. No freebies, though.

* Print a 13x18" Poster, Instead. Flaming Lotus girls did a poster where a 12-month calendar was printed in the center and the photos of the girls framed it. Looked gorgeous. About $300 to print 250.

So... Any other recommendations? Any investors? Any opinions? Anyone care?

I could use some help

My foot has turned out to be more fucked up than was realized.
Before I go to a professional service, I would like to know if anyonw would like to help me, and make a few bucks doing my Laundry, as two flights of stairs times 4 trips is a major difficulty.

For a quick rundown (note that there were tests run between each phase below)

First my doctor thought it was 'soft tissue damage - minor

Then he thought it might be cyst pressing on a nerve - probably would go away by itself

Then I went to the Orthopedic Surgeon who
First thought it was a bone spur or maybe a chip - Both painful but minor

Then he thought it was an Avulsion Fracture - Serious, but heals fairly quickly

With the final X-Ray set, he determined that it was just a little farther down than that, which makes it a "Jones Fracture" (Google it, lots of info) which are slow or refuse to heal.

So instead of the 'hospital shoe', I have to wear a big plastic boot to keep my foot from flexing. Then it _Might_ heal. If it doesn't, they have to go in and run a screw through my bones, and add some reinforcing bone. The most fun about that is that I have to decide either to take the bone from my Hip
(ouch) or from the Bone bank (possibility of rejection).

Oh yea, the left ankle is just a bone spur, but since its been two years, it probably won't go away, and the surgery to fix it has a chance of permanently damaging my Achilles tendon.

Fire Arts Festival Pre-Party and The Passage Preview

The Haven crew is helping Dan & Karen realize their vision of a MASSIVE steel mother and child which they have titled "The Passage". The inspiration of the piece comes from the growing number of children in our community and the passing of information from teacher to student.

If you know how to weld, or if you don't and you're really really motivated or really really cute, you too can come whitewash our fence! It's fun and is so cool, if people find out that you helped build a steel woman large enough to whoop that wooden man's ass, they will throw themselves at you (and you won't even have to get em drunk) Gee!

We're previewing an element of the sculpture at the Fire Arts Festival this weekend, so we'll be putting down the welders and heading over to the Crucible to man the art and fan the the flames.

The plan is:
Cocktails at the shop at 7,
Head over to the Crucible at 8,
Start fires, chat about the art and party some more.

I'm not sure about the address of the shop, but you can't miss the 12foot tall letters that spell out "AMERICAN STEEL" and the building does take up the ENTIRE block on 20th at Mandela Parkway in Oakland not too far from the Crucible.

From the city, stay to the right off the bridge and get off (I said get off) at West Grand and go east (which is straight off the freeway). At Mandela Parkway turn right. At 2oth (which is the first street) turn left. Like I said, you can't miss the MASSIVE building on the right.

Here's the scoop on the FAF, in case you've read this far and have no idea what I'm talking about.

Fire Arts Arena Show: Lightning From Above $25 8pm - Midnight
This night pays homage to the pyro legends of fire sculpture and the masters of electric and illuminated installations, as their work will be running bright all night. Neon, LEDs, an aluminum pour and bolts of lightning from a giant Tesla coil, all topped off with exclusive performances and a fire performer finale you will not believe.

Creature is throwing a benefit at Cellspace on Friday. In order to keep their permits, cellspace has to sound proof the bldg. Creature is in charge of the Audio Visual dept there so he's in charge of making this happen. He's been working like mad on this fundraiser. (EvilAliens know what that's like.)

Anyway, it's gonna be super cool. It'll be a tribal-gypsy costume theme. I'm really excited about it because I've seen some of what they're putting into this bash.

OK. So... Let's make a showing. Blondie and I have put together smashing costumes. I know you guys will show up and I know you'll look like rockstars.

Anyone up for a BBQ potluck some night this week? How about Wed. night at 6pm. Bring meat &/or anything else. If you aren't working, feel free to come by earlier and bask in the sunshine on the deck with me. If you are, get here when you can. We'll try to have food ready early though so you 9-5 types don't have to be up too late.

I think this is the sunniest summer we've ever had at Haven. It's BEAUTIFUL! (Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the fog, but the sunshine is so yummy!) Plus, we've been working in the backyard and it's lookin' good. (I want to thank Blondie and Creature for their help & hard work, btw!) The hot tub is getting drained as we speak and I'm going to scrub it out as soon as it empties.

Friends and family,

It is with a great deal of pride that I bring you this news. After hours and hours of labor, I, Amy, have succesfully CLEANED MY ROOM.

I didn't just cut a pathway through the piles of clothing and cast-off computer parts. No, I have spotlessly santized my bathroom, tidied my bedroom, and cleaned off all surfaces (not belonging to Michael).

I've done laundry non-stop for days. I have washed every make-up brush and cosmetic tool. I have *dusted* high and low. I even polished my heirloom mahogany. I found strange things under my bed --both animate and otherwise. I have vacuumed. And finally, I SHAMPOOD MY CARPETS!

And for the Grand Finale, once the carpet is dry enough to put stuff back on the floor, I will move the furniture off the bed, and.... (drum roll)... I will MAKE MY BED! OH YES!

*Takes a swooping bow*

I would like to give special thanks to Blondie and Michael who stuck by through most of this project, lent a hand the few times I let them, and mostly kept me company through most of it. The hard parts flew by because they kept me laughing. I'm not sure I would have got through it otherwise.

Whose Toothbrush Is This Anyway? (And Other Lost & Found Stories)

I *love* that we have enough regular houseguests that there are lots of people who leave a toothbrush here! However...

Between the two upstairs bathrooms, there are about 15 unidentifiable toothbrushes. I am cleaning up. If they have a name on them or even initials, I am leaving them where they were. If not, they are going in a ziplock bag in the lost and found. If they aren't claimed after this weekend, I'm tossing them. I know it seems like a drastic measure but it's a loss of about $2 ea. and save me the clutter.

I will take the action item to come up with a good way for storing/naming toothbrushes.

That leads me to the subject of Lost and Found. Sunnycove has inspired me to keep a permanent lost and found. I spend so much time trying keeping track of what lost item goes to who.

I have established a permanent lost and found in a drawer in the living room. It will get cleaned out (I hope) a few times a year. If you think you lost something, ask a Haven resident to point you at the Lost and Found.

OK, haven is having a debate (and I'm not easily finding good answers on the net).

Summer begins June 21 or 22. That's also Summer Solstice.
Now Michael says that's mid-summer but how can it be if it's the 1st day of Solstice.
Carol is taking my side here (so far).

August 1 is Lammas or Lughnasadh, right? (I'm not even going to *pretend* like I spelled that right.)

Sep 21 is the first of Fall.
So Lammas would then fall 1/2 way between summer and fall -thus it's midsummer.

Michael disagrees. But IMHO, that's all that makes sense --cuz pagan holidays are on the 21st or 22nd, or on the 1st or 31st. And it wouldn't divide up otherwise.

So... you're welcome to demerrit my witch-points if I'm wrong, but what do you kids think?
